Ain Sokhna
Destination
This Ain Sokhna travel guide covers the best things to do in Ain Sokhna: beach resorts on the Red Sea coast closest to Cairo and the mountain town of Galala City. Below you will also find the best time to visit Ain Sokhna, how to get there and around, and where to stay.
Ain Sokhna lies on the western shore of the Gulf of Suez, in Suez governorate, and is the nearest stretch of Red Sea coast to Cairo. Its name means “the hot spring” in Arabic, after the sulphurous springs at the foot of Gebel Ataqa. Since the main highway from Cairo was upgraded, it has become the capital’s favourite weekend escape, with a long line of resorts, holiday villages and private beaches set between the mountains and the sea.
History and development
The hot springs were long used for bathing, but large-scale tourism only arrived from the 1990s onwards. Today Ain Sokhna is both a resort coast and an economic hub, with a major port and industrial zone on the Suez Canal Economic Zone at its northern end. Large ships waiting to enter the canal are a common sight offshore. To the south, the new Galala City climbs the slopes of the Galala plateau, about 20 km from central Ain Sokhna.
What to see and do
- Beaches and resorts: calm, clear water and mountain views; most beaches belong to hotels or holiday villages, so day-use passes are the usual way in.
- Snorkelling and water sports: reefs are more modest than in the southern Red Sea, but many resorts offer snorkelling, kayaking and boat trips.
- Galala City and the plateau: a newly built resort town with sea views from the mountainside.
- Red Sea monasteries: the Monastery of St Anthony, founded in the 4th century and among the oldest in the world, and nearby St Paul’s lie south via Zafarana; allow a full day and dress modestly.
Practical tips
Most people come for one or two nights. Thursday to Saturday and Egyptian public holidays are busy, so midweek is quieter and often cheaper. Resorts are strung out along the coast road, so you need a car, a driver or a hotel transfer to get around; there is little to do on foot outside the resorts. Bring reef-safe footwear, and remember that wind can make the water choppy in winter.
