Mummification Museum
Museum
The Mummification Museum is a small, well-designed museum on Luxor’s Corniche, near Luxor Temple. It explains how and why the ancient Egyptians preserved the dead, from the practical steps of embalming to the religious beliefs behind them. Anubis, the jackal-headed god of embalming, appears throughout.
What to see
- Embalmers’ tools and materials, with clear panels explaining each stage of the process.
- Canopic jars, used to hold the internal organs.
- Decorated coffins and amulets placed with the body for protection.
- Mummified animals, including a crocodile, cats and birds.
- Statues of gods connected with death and the afterlife.
Visiting tips
Allow 30–45 minutes. The museum opens in two sessions, morning and evening, so it is a good choice after a day on the West Bank. No food or drink is allowed except small water bottles. Phone photography is permitted after paying the ticket fee, but not flash or tripods. Large bags go in the cloakroom.
Getting there
The museum is on the Corniche el-Nil in central Luxor, an easy walk from Luxor Temple and most East Bank hotels. Horse-drawn carriages and taxis are also easy to find along the Corniche. A visit pairs well with an evening at Luxor Temple, which is floodlit after dark, or with the Luxor Museum a little further north along the river.
