Tanta
Destination
This Tanta travel guide covers the best things to do in Tanta: the Sayed Ahmed El Badawi Mosque, its famous moulid and Delta sweets. Below you will also find the best time to visit Tanta, how to get there and around, and where to stay.
Tanta is the capital of Gharbia governorate and sits in the middle of the Nile Delta, between the Rosetta and Damietta branches of the river. It is a major rail junction and commercial centre, and one of Egypt’s great religious cities thanks to the shrine of the Sufi saint Sayed Ahmed El Badawi.
History
Al-Sayyid Ahmad al-Badawi was a 13th-century mystic born in Fez, Morocco, who settled in Tanta and founded the Ahmadiyya Sufi order. His tomb became a place of pilgrimage, and the town grew around it as a market and festival centre. In the 19th century the arrival of the railway and the cotton trade turned Tanta into one of the Delta’s largest cities; Egypt’s biggest textile town, El Mahalla El Kubra, lies close by in the same governorate.
What to see and do
- Sayed Ahmed El Badawi Mosque: the large mosque and shrine at the heart of the old city, surrounded by busy market lanes. Visitors should dress modestly; non-Muslims should ask before entering, as access can be restricted.
- Moulid El Badawi: held each October, this week-long festival for the saint’s birthday is one of the largest in the Muslim world, often said to draw millions of pilgrims. Sufi orders process with banners, zikr chanting fills the night, and fairground rides and stalls take over the streets. Dates follow local announcements, so check before you travel.
- Tanta sweets: the city is famous for its sweet shops, especially hummus el-moulid (sugar-coated chickpeas), halawa and nut brittles, sold year-round near the mosque.
- Markets: the souqs around the shrine sell devotional items, textiles and household goods.
Practical tips
Tanta is an easy day trip from Cairo or Alexandria by train, which is often faster than the road. Half a day is enough outside the moulid; during the festival, stay longer and book accommodation well ahead, as the city fills up. Crowds at the moulid are dense, so keep valuables secure and agree a meeting point if travelling in a group.
