This Ismailia travel guide covers the best things to do in Ismailia: Lake Timsah, the Suez Canal, tree-lined avenues and the Ismailia Museum. Below you will also find the best time to visit Ismailia, how to get there and around, and where to stay.
Ismailia is the capital of Ismailia governorate and sits on the northern shore of Lake Timsah, roughly halfway along the Suez Canal. It is the headquarters of the Suez Canal Authority and is often called Egypt’s garden city for its tree-lined streets, parks and villas.
History
Ismailia was founded in 1863 as the base camp for building the canal and named after Khedive Ismail. French engineers and canal company staff laid out a European-style quarter with villas, gardens and wide streets, much of which survives. The canal opened in 1869, and the city has been tied to it ever since, including through the wars of 1956, 1967 and 1973.
What to see and do
- Lake Timsah: beaches, clubs and a lakeside promenade, with the chance to watch large ships pass along the canal.
- Ferdinand de Lesseps House: the preserved residence of the French diplomat behind the canal, with period furniture and memorabilia; access is usually by arrangement.
- Ismailia Museum: one of Egypt’s older regional museums, with antiquities from the canal zone and the eastern Delta.
- The European quarter: stroll the old streets and gardens to see villas with wooden balconies and the canal-era churches.
- Local produce: Ismailia is famous for its mangoes, in season in late summer, and strawberries in winter and spring.
- Film festival: the city hosts the Ismailia International Film Festival for Documentaries and Short Films.
Practical tips
Ismailia makes an easy day trip or overnight stop from Cairo, or can be combined with Port Said and Suez on a canal-cities tour. The centre is compact and walkable, and taxis cover the lakeside. Do not photograph military installations or canal security points. Late summer is the time for mangoes; spring and autumn are most pleasant for walking.
