33rd Egyptian Marathon

Event

This event has ended. The next edition is 34th Egyptian Marathon, 8 Jan 2027.

The Egyptian Marathon is one of the oldest road races in Africa and one of the most scenic: runners set off from the terraced Temple of Hatshepsut on Luxor’s West Bank and loop past sugar-cane fields, villages and ancient monuments. The 2026 edition, the 33rd, was held on Friday 9 January with a full marathon, half marathon, 12 km and 5 km races, so there is a distance for casual runners as well as serious athletes. Races start early in the morning to avoid the heat. International entries are usually handled through online race platforms and specialist running-tour operators, which often bundle hotel and transfer packages in Luxor. Spectators can watch at the temple forecourt, but road closures on the West Bank are common on race morning.

What to expect

The race has a friendly, international feel, with Egyptian club runners and elite athletes lining up alongside visitors from around the world. The course is mostly flat and runs on roads through the fields between the Nile and the desert hills, where villagers often come out to cheer. Because several distances start on the same morning, families and groups of friends can take part together.

Getting there

Luxor is reached by air through Luxor International Airport, or by train from Cairo, including an overnight sleeper service. Runners staying on the East Bank usually cross to the West Bank early on race morning by organised transfer, so check the arrangements with your hotel or tour operator the day before.

Planning tips

  • January mornings can be cold before sunrise, so wear an old layer you can take off at the start.
  • The sun is strong once it is up; bring sunscreen and a cap, and drink at the water stations.
  • Book hotels early, as January is high season in Luxor.
  • Collect your race number in good time; pick-up arrangements are confirmed by the organisers in race week.

Many runners stay on for a few days to explore the Valley of the Kings, Medinet Habu and Karnak after the race.
