Ramadan 2027
Event
Ramadan 1448 AH is expected to begin around 8 February 2027 and end around 9 March, followed by Eid al-Fitr, with the first day of Eid listed for about 10 March 2027. During the fasting month, opening hours of offices, shops and some tourist sites are shortened, and many restaurants open only after sunset. In the evenings, Cairo is at its most atmospheric: streets are decorated with lanterns, families gather for iftar, and Islamic Cairo’s Al-Muizz Street and the Al-Hussein area stay busy late into the night with cafes and Ramadan tents. Visitors should avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public during daylight hours. Final dates depend on the sighting of the new moon and will be announced by Dar al-Ifta.
Dates: expected (based on previous years; confirm nearer the time).
What to expect
Fasting runs from dawn to sunset. Many people eat a second meal, suhoor, in the hours before dawn, and mosques fill for the evening tarawih prayers. Television stations launch their big Ramadan drama series, and bakeries and sweet shops sell seasonal treats such as kunafa and qatayef. The fast is broken at iftar, often with dates and water as the sunset call to prayer sounds.
For visitors, the main change is the rhythm of the day. Traffic is heavy in the hour before sunset as people rush home, then the streets go quiet during iftar before filling up again later in the evening. Many hotels and restaurants serve special iftar menus.
Ramadan etiquette
- Dress modestly, especially in older neighbourhoods and around mosques: cover shoulders and knees.
- Hotels and tourist restaurants usually continue to serve food and drink to non-fasting guests during the day.
- If you are invited to share iftar, it is a warm gesture; arriving a little before sunset is polite.
- Plan errands and sightseeing for the morning, when offices and sites are open and things run most smoothly.
Planning tips
February and early March are among the most comfortable months to visit Egypt, with mild days and cool nights. Check the opening hours of museums and sites shortly before your visit, as they are often adjusted during the month. Eid al-Fitr is a busy public holiday when trains, flights and coastal resorts fill up with Egyptian families, so book transport early if you plan to travel then.
