A small traditional sailing houseboat carrying a handful of guests between Esna and Aswan, with stops at quiet sites the big ships skip.

A dahabiya is a two-masted Nile sailing boat descended from the houseboats used by wealthy travellers in the nineteenth century. Modern dahabiyas are built in the same style but with comfortable en-suite cabins, and they carry only around 8 to 24 passengers, so the atmosphere is quiet and informal.

How it works

Most dahabiya cruises sail between Esna and Aswan over 4 to 6 nights, though some start in Luxor. Because the boats are small and rely partly on the wind (with a tug for calm days), they can moor at river islands and village banks rather than at crowded docks. Typical stops include:

  • The temples of Esna, Edfu and Kom Ombo, often visited at quieter times than the big ships.
  • El Kab, with its painted rock tombs and desert setting.
  • Gebel El Silsila, the ancient sandstone quarries with shrines cut into the cliffs.
  • Small farming villages and islands for walks, swims and picnics.

On board

Life revolves around the shaded open deck, where meals are often served al fresco. Cuisine is usually freshly cooked rather than buffet, and evenings are calm, sometimes with dinner on a sandbank under the stars. Some boats can be chartered privately for families or groups of friends.

Tips

Dahabiyas cost more than standard cruise ships, and they book up early for the October to April season. Check what is included (entrance fees, drinks, guide). Wi-Fi is limited on many boats, which most guests see as part of the charm.
