NMEC is the first museum of its kind in the Arab world, devoted entirely to Egyptian civilisation from prehistory to the present day. It stands within the archaeological site of El-Fustat, the first Islamic capital, overlooking the Ain El Sira springs.
The museum presents Egypt’s tangible and intangible heritage and shows how Egyptians have shaped their land through history. It is also an educational and research centre that preserves, commemorates and publishes information on Egyptian civilisation. The collection is arranged in six themed galleries: Dawn of Civilization, The Nile, Writing State and Society, Material Culture, Beliefs and Thinking, and the Gallery of the Royal Mummy.
