Borg El Arab International Airport is Alexandria’s airport, about 40 km south-west of the city. Since 4 September 2025 it has officially been called Alexandria International Airport, though the old name is still widely used and the IATA code remains HBE. It took over all of Alexandria’s flights when the city-centre El Nouzha airport closed in 2012.

Airlines and routes

EgyptAir and Air Arabia Egypt are the main carriers, and Air Arabia Egypt has its base here. Most routes go to the Gulf and Middle East, including Jeddah, Riyadh, Kuwait City, Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Doha. There are also flights to Libya, Amman, Istanbul, Athens and Italy, and domestic links to Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada. Most visitors from Europe connect through Cairo, Istanbul or a Gulf hub.

Getting to town

There is no rail link. Taxis and ride-hailing cars are the most practical option; allow around an hour to central Alexandria, more at rush hour. Some hotels arrange transfers. The airport is also handy for the western suburbs and the road to the North Coast.

Facilities

Terminal 2, a 40,000-square-metre building, opened in 2025 and raised capacity to around 6 million passengers a year. It has cafés, shops, ATMs, currency exchange and car hire desks.
