Hurghada International Airport
Airport
Hurghada International Airport (HRG) is the gateway to Egypt’s Red Sea coast and the country’s second-busiest airport after Cairo, handling about 9.6 million passengers in 2024. It lies inland, about 5 km south-west of El Dahar, Hurghada’s old town centre, and close to the resort strip along Sheraton Road and the southern hotel areas. It is one of Egypt’s busiest airports for charter flights.
Terminals
There are two passenger terminals. The large modern terminal complex, opened in December 2014, has check-in on several levels and handles most international and charter traffic. The older Terminal 1 is used by some flights. Both are close together. Check your booking for the right one.
Airlines and routes
Air Cairo has a base here, and most traffic is leisure travel from Europe. Regular and seasonal carriers include Condor, TUI, Eurowings, Discover, easyJet, Jet2, Wizz Air, Corendon and Transavia, plus Aeroflot from Russia. Flights connect with Germany, the UK, Central and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and the Gulf. Domestic flights link Hurghada with Cairo and, at times, other Egyptian cities.
Getting to town
- Hotel and tour transfers: most package holidaymakers are met by their tour operator or hotel. Independent travellers can pre-book a transfer.
- Taxis wait outside arrivals. They are not metered, so agree the fare in Egyptian pounds before you get in.
- Ride-hailing: Careem, and Uber at times, operate in Hurghada. Availability at the airport varies, so check the app after you land.
- Resorts further away: El Gouna is about 30 minutes north, and Makadi Bay, Sahl Hasheesh, Soma Bay and Safaga lie to the south. Pre-booked transfers are easiest for these.
Facilities
The new terminal has currency exchange and ATMs, mobile SIM counters, duty-free shopping, cafés and lounges. A visa-on-arrival counter sits before passport control.
Tips
- Bring US dollars, euros or pounds sterling in cash if you plan to buy a visa on arrival (US$30), or get an e-visa before you fly. See the official entry requirements.
- Peak charter days, especially weekends in winter and school holidays, bring long queues. Arrive early for departure.
- Porters may offer help with bags. Agree a tip first or carry your own.
- Luxor is about four hours away by road. Day trips by coach leave from Hurghada’s resorts.
