Marsa Matrouh International Airport
Airport
Marsa Matrouh International Airport (MUH) serves the Mediterranean resort town of Marsa Matrouh on Egypt’s north-west coast, known for its white sand and clear turquoise bays such as Agiba and Cleopatra’s Bath. It is a small airport just outside town and shares its runways with a military air base. Traffic is light and mostly seasonal, so flights are concentrated in the summer months.
Terminal
There is a single small passenger terminal with basic facilities. Because few flights operate, it is usually quiet, and arrival formalities can be quick when there is only one flight on the ground.
Airlines and routes
Recent international services are seasonal charters and leisure flights. They include Neos from Milan Malpensa, Rome Fiumicino and Verona, Smartwings charters from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland, and Air Serbia charters from Belgrade. Domestic flights from Cairo have run in some seasons. Schedules change often and are not always daily, so check with the airline before planning around a flight.
Getting to town
- Taxis meet arriving flights. The town is only a few kilometres away, so the ride is short. Agree the fare before you set off.
- Hotel transfers are the easiest option for resorts along the coast.
- There is no practical public transport from the terminal. Ride-hailing coverage is limited, so don’t rely on it.
Route to Siwa
Marsa Matrouh is the nearest airport to Siwa Oasis, which has no commercial airport. Siwa is about 300 km away on a good desert road, roughly four hours’ drive by private car or by bus from Marsa Matrouh’s bus station. Many travellers instead take the direct overnight bus from Cairo or Alexandria.
Facilities
Facilities are basic. Bring Egyptian pounds or a card, as there may be few exchange and food options. Buy a SIM card in town if you didn’t get one on arrival.
Tips
- Outside summer, flights may not run at all. Alexandria’s Borg El Arab airport, and El Alamein airport for the north coast resorts, are alternatives.
- If you are heading to Siwa, check for checkpoints on the desert road and carry your passport.
- Check visa rules before you travel. The UK government’s entry requirements are a clear summary.
