Sohag International Airport opened in 2010 about 24 km south of Sohag city, on the desert edge of the Nile Valley in Upper Egypt. Its terminal has a Pharaonic-style design and was built for around 3.5 million passengers a year. Most passengers are Egyptians working in the Gulf, but it is also the closest airport for visitors to Abydos, Akhmim and the monasteries near Sohag.
Airlines and routes
EgyptAir links Sohag with Cairo. International flights are mostly to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE: flynas (Jeddah, Riyadh), flyadeal (Jeddah), Jazeera Airways and Kuwait Airways (Kuwait City) and Air Arabia (Abu Dhabi and Sharjah) have all served the airport recently. Air Cairo’s Sohag routes are listed as suspended. Passenger numbers grew strongly in summer 2026, but routes come and go, so check the airline’s own timetable.
Getting to town
Taxis are the normal way into Sohag; agree the fare before you set off. Abydos, with the Temple of Seti I, is further south and is best reached by taxi or with a driver for the day.
Facilities
The terminal has separate international arrival and departure halls, a VIP lounge, duty-free shops and car parking. Expect a quiet airport outside the peaks around holidays and the start and end of the Gulf work season.
