The Sharm El Sheikh Museum opened in 2020 and gives Red Sea holidaymakers a chance to see real ancient Egyptian treasures without travelling to Cairo or Luxor. The idea was first proposed in 2006 and building was completed in 2017. The collection of several thousand objects traces Egyptian civilisation and the cultural heritage of Sinai.
What to see
- The Grand Hall, on people and wildlife in ancient Egypt, including animal mummies.
- The Hall of Civilisation, with the inner and outer coffins and canopic jars of a woman named Isetemheb, papyri, cosmetic and perfume vessels, a head from a statue of Hatshepsut and Tanagra figurines.
- Sinai heritage displays on the history and traditions of the peninsula.
Visiting tips
Allow 1 to 1.5 hours. The museum opens in two sessions, late morning and evening, which makes it a good option after a day at the beach or diving. An audio guide is available for an extra fee. Large bags and backpacks must go in the cloakroom, and flash photography is not allowed.
Getting there
The museum is in Sharm El Sheikh city. Taxis and hotel transport are the easiest way to get there from Naama Bay and the resort areas. Some hotel excursion desks offer an evening trip that combines the museum with a visit to the Old Market.
