27th Alexandria Biennale for Mediterranean Countries

Event

First held in 1955, the Alexandria Biennale is one of the oldest art biennials in the world, and in 2026 it returned after a 12-year pause. The 27th edition, curated by Egyptian artist Moataz Nasr, was announced to open on 18 September 2026 with around 50 to 55 artists from across the Mediterranean. Instead of a single exhibition hall, works are installed in landmarks around the city, such as the Roman Amphitheatre at Kom el-Dikka, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Qaitbay Citadel, so a visit doubles as a tour of Alexandria’s history. Most venues charge only their usual site entry fee. The closing date had not been published at the time of research; the end date here is an estimate, so check with the Ministry of Culture before travelling.

Dates: announced by the organisers.

What to expect

The Biennale presents painting, sculpture, installation, video and photography by artists from countries around the Mediterranean. Because works are placed in historic sites rather than a single gallery, the exhibition encourages visitors to explore the city and see its monuments in a new light. Each edition is built around a curatorial theme, explained at the venues and in the programme.

Getting there

Alexandria is linked to Cairo by frequent trains from Ramses Station and by the Desert Road. Borg El Arab Airport serves the city. Within Alexandria, taxis and ride-hailing apps are the easiest way to move between venues; the historic tram is slower but atmospheric.

Planning tips

  • Autumn is a pleasant time in Alexandria, with warm days and sea breezes.
  • Allow at least a full day for the main venues, which are spread along the city.
  • Check the opening hours of each site before setting out.
  • Stop for fresh fish near the Eastern Harbour between visits.
