Few hotels in Cairo can match the backstory of this one. Its heart is the Gezira Palace, built by Khedive Ismail to host European royalty at the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, and the ornate halls, carved woodwork and arcades of that palace now serve as the lobby, ballrooms and lounges. Two modern towers rise on either side, holding more than a thousand rooms, so this is a big, busy hotel rather than a quiet retreat.
The location on Gezira Island in leafy Zamalek is a real strength. Many rooms have balconies looking over the Nile or the palace gardens, and the Cairo Tower, the Opera House and Zamalek’s cafes and galleries are a short walk or taxi ride away. Downtown and the Egyptian Museum are about ten minutes across the river.
Life revolves around the large garden terrace, where the pool, a popular all-day cafe and several of the hotel’s fourteen dining outlets sit under the trees. There is also a casino, a fitness centre and extensive event space, which makes weekends lively with weddings.
It suits travellers who want a central base with historic character and lots of choice on site. Rooms in the towers vary in age, so ask for a renovated or Nile-view room.
