Sandal Nile Cruise

Nile Cruise

Updated · Egypt Info editors

A cruise aboard a sandal, a large traditional Nubian cargo sailboat converted into a small, simple-but-comfortable passenger vessel.

The sandal is a traditional Nile sailing boat once used to carry goods such as grain, stone and pottery between Nubia and Upper Egypt. It is larger and broader than a felucca and typically has a single great sail. A few sandals have been converted into small cruise boats, offering an experience halfway between a felucca trip and a dahabiya.

How it works

Sandal cruises usually sail between Aswan and Esna or Luxor over 3 to 5 nights, carrying around 6 to 16 guests. They rely on the wind and the current, sometimes assisted by a tug, and moor at quiet riverbanks and islands. Stops typically include Kom Ombo, Gebel El Silsila and Edfu, with walks through villages along the way.

On board

Cabins are compact, and facilities are simpler than on a dahabiya, though most converted sandals now have private or shared bathrooms. Meals are home-style Egyptian cooking served on deck, and life on board is unhurried.

Tips

Sandal cruises are offered by a small number of operators, so availability is limited and boats may be booked for private charter. They work well for families or groups of friends. Ask exactly what facilities are on board and what excursions are included. October to April is the main season.
