Esna Temple
Archaeological Site
The Temple of Khnum stands in the centre of Esna, on the west bank of the Nile about 55 km south of Luxor. Khnum was the ram-headed creator god who shaped people on a potter’s wheel. Building began in the Ptolemaic period, but what survives is mainly the Roman-era hypostyle hall. Over the centuries the town grew up around it, so the temple now sits in a deep pit about 9 metres below street level.
What to see
The hall has 24 columns with richly carved capitals and reliefs of Roman emperors making offerings to the gods. Between 2018 and 2023 an Egyptian–German team from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the University of Tübingen cleaned away centuries of soot and dirt. The work revealed vivid original colours on the ceiling and columns, a complete set of zodiac signs and nearly 200 previously unknown ink inscriptions. Esna now ranks with Dendera as one of the best places in Egypt to see an astronomical ceiling.
Visiting tips
- Allow 45 minutes to an hour. Bring binoculars or a zoom lens for the ceiling.
- Your ticket also covers Wikalat al-Gedawy, a restored Ottoman-era merchants’ building in the old town nearby.
- The covered market street that leads to the temple is worth a short wander.
Getting there
Esna is about an hour by road from Luxor and is a common first stop on the drive or cruise to Edfu and Aswan. Many Nile cruise boats pass through the Esna lock.
