Mena House is the hotel at the foot of the Pyramids. It began life in the 1860s as a royal hunting lodge and over the following century hosted kings, film stars and statesmen, including the leaders who met here during the Second World War. Since 2012 it has been run by Marriott, and the historic palace wing still has its carved wooden screens, mosaics and antique furnishings.
The setting is the real draw. The hotel sits in about 40 acres of gardens, and from many balconies, from the pool and from the terrace restaurant you look straight at the Great Pyramid, which is especially memorable at sunrise. Rooms are split between the older palace wing, which has more character, and the larger garden wing.
Dining includes an all-day restaurant and terrace facing the Pyramids, a long-established Indian restaurant and casual lounges. There is also a spa, a gym and a large pool area.
The Pyramids entrance is a few minutes away and the Grand Egyptian Museum is a short drive. Central Cairo, by contrast, can be an hour away in traffic. It suits first-time visitors, history lovers and anyone for whom waking up to the Pyramids is the point of the trip.
