The White Desert lies between the oases of Bahariya and Farafra in the Western Desert. Its brilliant white chalk has been sculpted by wind and sand into mushrooms, cones, arches and pillars that appear to glow under moonlight. It is managed as a landscape protected area and is often called the White Desert National Park.

Landscape and wildlife

Two zones are popular with visitors: the new White Desert, with its famous mushroom and chicken shaped formations, and the old White Desert, with larger chalk inselbergs. Nearby are the Agabat valley, Crystal Mountain, a ridge of quartz crystals, and the dark volcanic hills of the Black Desert towards Bahariya. Fennec foxes often visit camps at night, and fossil shells lie in the chalk.

What to do

  • Take a one-night 4×4 safari from Bahariya, camping among the formations.
  • Photograph the chalk at sunset and sunrise.
  • Stop at the Black Desert, Crystal Mountain and Agabat on the way.

Getting there and best time

Bahariya Oasis is about 4 to 5 hours by road from Cairo, and safaris start there; the protectorate entrance is around 45 km north of Farafra. October to April is best. Nights in winter can be near freezing, so bring warm clothing.

Entry fee: a protectorate fee per foreign visitor, plus a camping charge, normally included in safari prices (last checked October 2026).

Last checked October 2026. Entry fees and access rules change; check with the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency or a local operator before you go. Sources: eeaa.gov.eg, en.wikipedia.org.
