The Red Sea is one of the best places in the world to try scuba diving, with clear water and coral close to the surface. No experience or certificate is needed for this day.

On the dive boat an instructor explains the equipment and the basics before you go in. You make two introductory dives at reef sites, with the instructor beside you the whole time. Between dives there is lunch on board.

Tell the operator about any health conditions before you book; some, such as ear or lung problems, rule out diving. Marine park fees, if charged, are extra.

Who it suits

This is for anyone curious about diving who wants to try it before committing to a full course. It suits confident swimmers and less confident ones alike, as long as you are comfortable in the water and with your face under it. Many people go on to take a full beginner course afterwards.

What to bring

  • Swimwear and a towel
  • Reef-safe sunscreen and a hat for the time on deck
  • A warm layer for between dives, especially from December to March
  • Any medicines you need
  • Cash for tips and for any marine park fees

Good to know

Pickup is at about 08:00 and you are out all day. The instructor stays with you underwater, and the first dive is usually in shallow water close to the reef.

You will be asked to fill in a short medical form. Be honest, as some conditions mean you need a doctor’s approval first.

The usual advice is to wait about 24 hours after diving before you fly, so plan this trip early in your holiday rather than on your last day.

Ear pressure is the most common difficulty for beginners. The instructor will show you how to equalise, and you can always go down more slowly. Ask Egy Trip about minimum ages if you are booking for children.
