This Mansoura travel guide covers the best things to do in Mansoura: the Dar Ibn Luqman museum, the Nile corniche and Delta food. Below you will also find the best time to visit Mansoura, how to get there and around, and where to stay.
Mansoura is the capital of Dakahlia governorate in the north-eastern Nile Delta, on the east bank of the Damietta branch of the Nile, facing the town of Talkha. It is one of the Delta’s largest and liveliest cities, known for its university, its medical centres and its riverside corniche.
History
Mansoura is relatively young for Egypt, though still around 800 years old. It began in 1219 as a fortified camp built by the Ayyubid sultan al-Kamil to block the Fifth Crusade, which had captured Damietta. In 1250 the Seventh Crusade, led by King Louis IX of France, was defeated near the town; Louis was captured and held in the house of Ibrahim Ibn Luqman, a royal official. The city’s name, al-Mansura, means “the victorious”, and is generally linked to this victory. In the modern era Mansoura grew as a cotton and trading centre, and today Mansoura University is one of Egypt’s major universities.
What to see and do
- Dar Ibn Luqman (Mansoura National Museum): the house where Louis IX was held, now a museum with crusader-era arms and armour, maps and large paintings of the battle.
- The Nile corniche: a popular promenade with cafes and river views, busiest in the evenings.
- Markets and old streets: the city centre has busy shopping streets and some early 20th-century buildings.
- Mendes (Tell el-Rub’a): an ancient site in the governorate with a towering granite shrine, for those interested in archaeology.
- New Mansoura: a new city being built on the Mediterranean coast north of Mansoura, with beaches and seafront developments.
Practical tips
One day covers the museum and corniche; stay overnight to enjoy the city’s evening life. Trains and buses link Mansoura with Cairo, and the city is also within easy reach of Damietta and the coast. Taxis and microbuses are cheap for getting around. Check the museum’s opening hours in advance, as regional museums sometimes close for renovation.
