Damanhur
Destination

This Damanhur travel guide covers the best things to do in Damanhur: the Ottoman houses of nearby Rashid and the Delta countryside of Beheira. Below you will also find the best time to visit Damanhur, how to get there and around, and where to stay.
Damanhur is the capital of Beheira governorate in the western Nile Delta, about 60 km south-east of Alexandria. It is a busy agricultural and market city rather than a sightseeing destination, but it sits at the centre of a governorate with two of Lower Egypt’s best excursions: the Ottoman town of Rosetta (Rashid) and the monasteries of Wadi El Natrun.
History
The city’s name comes from the ancient Egyptian for “City of Horus”, reflecting the cult of the falcon god. The Greeks identified it as Hermopolis Mikra, known in Latin as Hermopolis Parva, and it served as a regional capital in Ptolemaic times. In the Middle Ages it was the main town of Beheira, and the railway built in the 1850s under Abbas Pasha brought new prosperity as a cotton market on the line between Cairo and Alexandria.
What to see and do
- Rosetta (Rashid): where the Rosetta branch of the Nile meets the sea. The town has a large group of Ottoman-era brick merchant houses and mosques; the Rashid Museum occupies the mansion of the governor Arab Koli. The Rosetta Stone was found in 1799 by French soldiers working on the fort just outside town, later called Fort Julien.
- Wadi El Natrun: in the desert on the governorate’s southern edge, four historic monasteries (St Macarius, Anba Bishoy, the Syrian Monastery and Baramus) continue a monastic tradition reaching back to the 4th century. Visitors are generally welcome; dress modestly and avoid fasting periods if you want a longer tour.
- Damanhur’s markets: the city centre has lively food and textile markets and a slice of ordinary Delta life.
Practical tips
Damanhur is on the main Cairo to Alexandria railway, so it is easy to stop off. Rosetta is usually visited as a day trip from Alexandria, and the Wadi El Natrun monasteries from Cairo along the desert road. Allow one day for Rosetta and half a day to a day for the monasteries. A hired car or driver is the most practical way to link the sites. Rosetta’s houses are best seen on foot, ideally in the cooler morning.
