Al Azhar Park

Updated · Egypt Info editors

Al Azhar Park is one of the largest green spaces in Cairo, covering about 30 hectares (74 acres) on the Darassa hills in Darb al-Ahmar. It opened in 2005 as a gift to the city from the Aga Khan, created by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture at a cost of more than US$30 million. It takes its name from the nearby Al-Azhar Mosque, founded under the Fatimids in the 10th century and still a leading centre of Islamic learning.

From rubbish dump to garden

For centuries the site was a rubbish dump outside the city walls, with debris up to 40 metres deep in places. Work began in 1997 and more than a million cubic metres of debris was removed. During excavation, a long stretch of the 12th-century Ayyubid city wall with its towers and gates was uncovered and restored, and the park’s creation was part of a wider programme to restore historic buildings and improve life in neighbouring Darb al-Ahmar.

What to see

  • Formal gardens, sunken gardens, fountains and water channels inspired by Islamic garden design.
  • Panoramic views over historic Cairo, with the Saladin Citadel and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali to the south and the minarets of the medieval city to the west.
  • The restored Ayyubid wall along the park’s western edge.
  • Cafés and restaurants with terraces overlooking the city, children’s play areas and a lake.

Sunset is the best time to come, when the light falls on the Citadel and the call to prayer rises from the mosques below.

How to get there

The main entrance is on Salah Salem Street. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the easiest way to reach it from central Cairo, around 15–20 minutes. Combine a visit with Al-Muizz Street and the Al-Azhar Mosque, a short walk or ride away.
