This Asyut travel guide covers the best things to do in Asyut: the Monastery of Al-Muharraq on the Holy Family route and the rock tombs of Gebel Asyut. Below you will also find the best time to visit Asyut, how to get there and around, and where to stay.

Asyut is the capital of Asyut governorate and one of the largest cities in Upper Egypt, set on the west bank of the Nile roughly midway between Cairo and Luxor. It is a university and commercial city, with a large Coptic Christian community, and its main draw for visitors is the cluster of monasteries linked to the Holy Family’s journey through Egypt.

History

In pharaonic times the city was the capital of the 13th nome of Upper Egypt and a centre of worship of the jackal god Wepwawet; the Greeks called it Lycopolis, “wolf city”. Rock-cut tombs of its governors line the cliffs to the west. Asyut later became a terminus of the desert caravan route from Darfur and a major Nile market. The Asyut Barrage, completed in 1902 and later modernised with a hydroelectric plant, regulates the river for irrigation, and Asyut University, opened in 1957, is one of the largest in Egypt.

What to see and do

  • Monastery of Al-Muharraq (Deir al-Muharraq): at the foot of Mount Qusqam near El Qusiya, north of the city. Coptic tradition holds that the Holy Family stayed here for about six months, and the monastery is a major pilgrimage centre. Modest dress is required.
  • Durunka: a monastery built into the desert cliffs south-west of Asyut around caves associated with the Holy Family; its August feast of the Virgin draws very large crowds.
  • Riverside and markets: the Nile corniche and the old souq quarter give a feel for a big Upper Egyptian city.
  • The barrage: the Asyut Barrage and its bridge make a good viewpoint over the Nile.

Practical tips

One or two days covers the monasteries and city. Asyut is on the main Cairo to Aswan railway and has its own airport with domestic flights. Taxis are the easiest way to reach Durunka and Al-Muharraq; a driver for the day is worth it. Security arrangements for foreign visitors in Middle Egypt vary, so follow local advice and carry your passport. Avoid the August feast if you dislike crowds; if you want to see a pilgrimage at its busiest, time your visit for it.
