About New Alamein City
New Alamein City lies on the Mediterranean coast about 110 km west of Alexandria, close to the historic town of El Alamein. Founded in 2018, it was planned as the first of a new generation of coastal cities, designed to be lived in all year rather than only in summer. It combines residential districts, universities, hotels, a government summer headquarters and a long public seafront, and it has quickly become the main centre of Egypt’s North Coast, known locally as the Sahel.
The coast here is known for its turquoise sea and fine white sand. From June to September the city is the centre of the summer social scene, with concerts, beach clubs and restaurants filled with visitors from Cairo and abroad.
What to see
New Alamein Towers

A cluster of tall residential and hotel towers stands right on the shore and forms the city’s signature skyline, visible for miles along the coast. Some towers include hotels and serviced apartments, and the upper floors have wide sea views.
The Corniche
A long public promenade runs along the beach, with walking and cycling paths, cafes, restaurants and open public beaches. It is liveliest at sunset and on summer evenings.
Alamein Festival and the Heritage City
Every summer the New Alamein Festival brings international and Arab music stars, sports events and family entertainment to the city. Many events are held at the Heritage City (Madinat Al Turath), a district built in a traditional style, and at the U Arena open-air venue. Dates and line-ups are announced in late spring.
Latin Quarter and Downtown
Mixed-use districts with shopping streets, restaurants and residential compounds are taking shape inland from the towers, alongside new university campuses.
El Alamein war memorials
A short drive east, El Alamein was the scene of decisive Second World War battles in 1942. The Commonwealth War Cemetery holds the graves of thousands of Allied soldiers, while the German and Italian memorials stand on hills overlooking the sea to the west. The El Alamein Military Museum displays uniforms, weapons, vehicles and maps that explain the North African campaign.
North Coast beaches

The city is a good base for exploring the North Coast’s beaches and resorts, from Marina El Alamein to the bays of Sidi Abdel Rahman and further west.
Practical tips
Summer is busy and hotel prices peak in July and August, so book early. Outside summer the city is quieter and good for history-focused trips to the memorials. The sea can be rough in winter.
Last checked October 2026. The city is still being built, so opening dates and transport links change: confirm before you go. Sources: egyptianstreets.com, egypttoday.com, english.ahram.org.eg, en.wikipedia.org.
