Shibin El Kom
Destination
This Shibin El Kom travel guide covers the best things to do in Shibin El Kom: Nile villages, farmland and everyday life in the Delta countryside. Below you will also find the best time to visit Shibin El Kom, how to get there and around, and where to stay.
Shibin El Kom is the capital of Monufia governorate, in the southern Nile Delta roughly 60 km north-west of Cairo. It is a working provincial city rather than a tourist centre, surrounded by some of Egypt’s most intensively farmed land: a patchwork of cotton, wheat, maize and clover fields cut by canals and dotted with mud-brick and concrete villages. For travellers it is a chance to see Delta life away from the main tourist trail.
History
For centuries the main town of the province was Menouf. In 1826 Muhammad Ali moved the provincial capital to Shibin El Kom, reportedly because it lay close to the centre of the governorate. The city grew as an administrative and market centre, and in 1976 it became home to Menoufia University, which still dominates much of city life. Monufia is also known as the birthplace of two presidents: Anwar Sadat was born in the village of Mit Abu El Kom and Hosni Mubarak in Kafr El Meselha.
What to see and do
- Countryside and Nile villages: the landscape is the main reason to come. Drive or cycle out along the canal roads to see farming villages, pigeon towers, water buffalo and weekly markets.
- Market streets: the city centre has busy food and textile markets where you can try Delta staples such as feteer meshaltet (flaky layered pastry), fresh dairy and seasonal fruit.
- Sadat’s home village: Mit Abu El Kom attracts visitors interested in the late president, though there is no major museum there; the main Sadat Museum is at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Alexandria.
- Riverside towns: the governorate is bordered by both the Rosetta and Damietta branches of the Nile, and the riverside is popular with local families on Fridays.
Practical tips
A day trip from Cairo or a short stopover is usually enough. The city centre is compact; for the countryside, hire a taxi or driver for a few hours. Tourist facilities are basic and few people speak English, so a local contact or Arabic phrasebook helps. Dress conservatively and expect friendly curiosity rather than tourist services.
