Orange Bay Island snorkelling trip

Orange Bay is a small island off Hurghada, known for its white sand and shallow, very clear water. This is the classic Hurghada boat day and the one most first-time visitors pick.

After hotel pickup you board at the marina and stop at two coral reefs on the way out, with a guide in the water. Then you get about two hours on the island to swim or lie on the beach. Lunch is served on the boat, and soft drinks and water are included all day.

The island gets busy in high season, so expect company on the beach. Bring sunscreen that is kind to the reef, a towel and some cash for extras.

Who it suits

This is a good first boat trip for almost everyone. Families, couples and groups of friends all enjoy it, and it suits both keen snorkellers and people who mainly want a beach day. If you want a quieter island, Hula Hula is less busy; if you want to see dolphins, look at the Dolphin House trip.

The water at Orange Bay is shallow and calm, which makes it easy for children and less confident swimmers. Life jackets and snorkelling gear are provided, and the guide stays with the group at the reefs.

The sea is warmest from early summer to autumn. From around December to March the water is cooler, so many people swim for shorter periods.

The sun on the island and the boat deck is strong, especially in summer. Reapply sunscreen during the day and cover up when you can.

If you get seasick, take something before you board, as the ride back can be bumpier when the wind picks up in the afternoon. Please do not stand on or touch the coral.
