This El Farafra Oasis travel guide covers the best things to do in El Farafra Oasis: the chalk formations of the White Desert, desert camping and hot springs. Below you will also find the best time to visit El Farafra Oasis, how to get there and around, and where to stay.
Farafra is the most remote and least populated of the main oases of Egypt’s Western Desert, part of the New Valley governorate. Its small main town, Qasr al-Farafra, is surrounded by palm groves, olive and fruit gardens and hot springs, and it is the nearest base for the White Desert, one of the most extraordinary landscapes in Egypt.
History
Farafra has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the ancient Egyptians knew it as the “Land of the Cow”. For centuries it was an isolated stop on desert caravan routes. The old mud-brick fortress-village at the heart of Qasr al-Farafra, where families once sheltered from raiders, is several centuries old. Change came only with the asphalt road and new farming projects of the late 20th century.
What to see and do
- White Desert National Park: brilliant white chalk formations eroded into mushrooms, cones and animal shapes, best seen at sunset and by moonlight on an overnight camp.
- The Black Desert and Crystal Mountain: on the road from Bahariya, the landscape changes from dark volcanic-capped hills to a ridge of quartz crystal.
- Djara Cave: a remote cave with prehistoric rock engravings of gazelles, ostriches and other animals, and a dripstone interior; reached only by 4×4.
- Badr’s Museum: the house-museum of local artist Badr Abdel Moghny, with sculptures and paintings of oasis life.
- Bir Sitta: a hot spring about 6 km from town, a favourite place for an evening soak.
Practical tips
Most visitors spend two to four days on a desert safari from Cairo via Bahariya, often with one night camping in the White Desert. A 4×4 with an experienced, licensed driver is essential for the desert, and operators arrange the necessary permits. Desert nights are cold, especially in winter, so bring warm clothes. Carry your passport for checkpoints, take all rubbish away with you, and never climb on the chalk formations.
