Beni Suef
Destination

This Beni Suef travel guide covers the best things to do in Beni Suef: the Meidum Pyramid, ancient Herakleopolis and the Nile countryside. Below you will also find the best time to visit Beni Suef, how to get there and around, and where to stay.
Beni Suef is the capital of Beni Suef governorate, a busy agricultural and industrial city on the west bank of the Nile about 120 km south of Cairo. It sees few foreign tourists. This is everyday Middle Egypt, with a Nile corniche, sugar-cane fields and a busy market quarter, and the city is a practical base for some early pyramids and lesser-known ancient sites.
History
The area was important long before the modern city. About 15 km to the west lies Ihnasya el-Medina, the site of Herakleopolis Magna, capital of Egypt under the 9th and 10th Dynasties and an important town through the Greek and Roman periods; excavations there are still producing finds. Beni Suef itself has been the seat of its province since Egypt was divided into provinces in the 19th century.
What to see and do
- Meidum Pyramid: in the north of the governorate near El Wasta, this tower-like ruin is one of Egypt’s most striking monuments. It was probably begun as a step pyramid and converted by Sneferu into an early attempt at a true, smooth-sided pyramid; its outer casing later collapsed, leaving the stepped core standing above a mound of rubble. The famous painted Meidum Geese, now in Cairo, come from a nearby tomb. See the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities page.
- Herakleopolis (Ihnasya): temple remains and ruins of the ancient city, best visited with a local guide.
- Beni Suef Museum: opened in 1997 with finds from the governorate’s sites, from prehistory to the Coptic and Islamic periods; check whether it is open before you go.
- Eastern desert road: the road east towards Zafarana on the Red Sea passes the turn-off for the Monastery of St Anthony, one of the oldest monasteries in the world.
Practical tips
Most visitors see Meidum as a day trip from Cairo, often combined with Dahshur or the Fayoum; a night in Beni Suef suits travellers heading further south by train. Public transport to the archaeological sites is limited, so hire a car and driver or a taxi for the day. Shade is scarce at Meidum, so bring water, a hat and sun cream. Dress modestly in town, as this is a conservative, provincial city.
