Wadi El Rayan is a desert depression south-west of the Faiyum oasis. In the 1970s surplus irrigation water from Faiyum was channelled into it, creating two linked lakes in the middle of the sand. The reserve that grew around them also includes Wadi El Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Landscape and wildlife
The cascades between the upper and lower lakes are a favourite weekend spot for Egyptian families. Around them stretch dunes, Gebel Medawara and the turquoise Magic Lake, whose colours shift with the light. Wildlife includes fennec and red foxes, dorcas gazelle, desert reptiles and many waterbirds on the lakes. Springs in the south of the reserve support small patches of palm and acacia.
What to do
- Visit the waterfalls and have lunch at one of the simple cafes.
- Try sandboarding on the dunes near Magic Lake.
- Continue to Wadi El Hitan to see whale fossils in the open desert.
- Camp overnight for clear night skies.
