Basma Hotel

Basma Hotel sits on one of the highest hills in Aswan, directly opposite the Nubian Museum, and its main selling point is the view. From the terraced garden and pool deck, and from Nile-facing rooms, you look out over the river, the granite boulders of the First Cataract, Elephantine Island and the desert hills of the West Bank.

The hotel has around 200 rooms, most with balconies, in a straightforward style that some guests find a little dated. It is officially rated four stars and offers good value compared with the island resorts and the historic hotels on the river.

The pool is surrounded by gardens and sun terraces, though it is not heated, so it is cooler in winter. Breakfast is a generous buffet, and there are restaurants and a bar for evening meals. Staff are often singled out for friendly service in guest reviews.

The Nubian Museum is literally across the road, and the Fatimid cemetery is close by. The Corniche, the souq and the boat landings are about two kilometres away, so most guests use taxis. It suits budget-conscious travellers, groups and anyone who wants a quiet, scenic base with big Nile views at a moderate price.
