The Winter Palace is Luxor’s grand dame. Built in 1886 for European travellers who spent the winter on the Nile, it stands on the Corniche just south of Luxor Temple, with a sweeping double staircase, high-ceilinged Victorian rooms and a large garden of palms and tropical trees. It was here that news of Tutankhamun’s tomb was announced in 1922, and generations of archaeologists, writers and royalty have stayed under its roof.
Important: the hotel is currently closed. Mandarin Oriental took over management in early 2026, and the property shut for a complete restoration. It is due to reopen in July 2027 as Mandarin Oriental Winter Palace, Luxor, with refreshed rooms and suites, six dining venues, a Mandarin Oriental spa set in the gardens and new event spaces. Opening dates can shift, so check before planning.
When it reopens, the location will again be a major draw: Luxor Temple, the souq and the Corniche promenade are all within walking distance, and boats to the West Bank leave from nearby. It will suit travellers who want historic atmosphere and a central base in Luxor. Until then, the Booking.com listing should not be relied on for stays.
